Birth of Royalty – Video

Today’s post features a project I’ve been working on for a while. In late August, I found a Monarch butterfly egg on a milkweed leaf, in my butterfly garden. I removed the leaf and placed it inside a mesh butterfly cage in the garage. When the caterpillar was close to hatching (as evidenced by […]

Plenty of Character

Today’s post features one of the Mount Evans (Colorado) inhabitants, a very old Bristlecone Pine tree that has lots of character built into it’s trunk (captured a few years ago, during one of my many photo trips to this beautiful place): Photographic Equipment Used: Canon 1D Mark 3 body Canon 28-135mm f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens Handheld, […]

Rocky Mtn Senior Citizen

Today’s post features an interesting wildflower I found growing all along the road to the top of Mount Evans (Colorado). Commonly called “The Old Man on the Mountain”, it seems to certainly live up to it’s name! Photographic Equipment Used: Canon 1D Mark 3 body Canon 28-135mm f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens, and Canon 180mm f/3.5 macro […]

Fun Friday: A Joyful Meal

Today’s post features a male Prothonotary Warbler that I photographed a few years at the Amarugia Highlands CA Lake (Missouri). As he flitted about, looking for insects, he found a nice morsel, captured and consumed it, then sang with joy: Photographic Equipment Used: Canon 7D body Canon 500mm, f/4 IS lens + Canon 1.4x TC […]

Taking Flight

Today’s post features a Blue-winged Teal drake (male) as it lifts off the Amarugia Highlands creek (MO), captured from my kayak. Yes, there is a beautiful green patch on the wing, but the leading edge is blue, giving this colorful duck it’s name: Photographic Equipment Used: Canon 7D body Canon 100-400mm f/4.5 – f/5.6 IS […]

A Common Visitor

Today’s post features a very common visitor to my yard, seemingly no matter where I live! Fun Friday: Been Drinking Again?

Even if you haven’t, today’s image may have you thinking you have endulged! While hiking Mount Evans (Colorado), I came upon this very interesting and unusual wildflower. Called Little Pink Elephants, aka Elephant Heads, I found several of these plants (called “herds”) growing along the lower elevation trails. This wildflower grows as a dense, vertical […]

Glistening in the Early Morning

Today’s post features a previously unpublished image I captured in 2013, while hiking the prairie at Amarugia CA (Missouri). Early in the morning is great for finding and photographing beautiful, dew-covered dragonflies. Here is one I came across on that morning: Finding dew-covered insects is always a great thing to discover … being covered with […]
