Chicory

On my last trip to the nearby prairie, I stopped by the road to capture a few images of a lovely blue wildflower that is very common this time of year … Chicory (Cichorium intybus), also known as “Blue Sailors”. A common roadside weed in our area, it is quite a beauty if viewed up-close. The root of this wildflower is used as an adulterant or flavoring for coffee. I love the blue color of the blooms and the close-up details of the flowers:

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 macro lens + Canon 1.4x TC (=252mm)
  • Vanguard Alta Pro 283CT carbon fiber tripod, with Graff Studioball ballhead
  • ISO 800 (slight wind was causing these tall wildflowers to sway in the breeze)
  • Aperture f/5
  • Shutter 1/250 sec. and 1/400 sec.
