Communication Skills

While photographing at the Venice Rookery, a squabble developed between an Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) and a Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus). Here are a couple of images I captured of their interaction:

Nothing really came of this disruption. After a few seconds, both birds decided the “issue” was not as important as first thought! The anhinga went back to drying his wings, while the cormorant began preening:

By the way, the top 2 photos show more examples of the webbed feet of the cormorant (although you can’t see them very well, the anhinga also has webbed feet), making it extremely comical to watch one of these birds trying to land in a tree!

  • Canon EF500mm, f/4 IS lens
  • Bogen 3221 tripod, with Wemberly gimbal head
  • ISO 500
  • Aperture f/11
  • Shutter 1/500 sec.
