Displaying Great Blue Herons

While visiting the Venice Rookery, the Great Blue Herons were in the middle of their breeding season. A couple of nests had chicks in them, while others were building nests and the birds displaying to attract mates. Here are a couple of displaying Great Blue Herons:

Bird behavior at breeding time can be exciting to watch as they often “pull out all stops” to attract a mate, build a nest and get the process going!

Photography Equipment Used:

  • Canon 1D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF500mm, f/4, IS lens, shot at 700mm
  • Bogen 3221 Tripod, with Wemberly Gimbal head
  • ISO 250 (top photo) and 500 (bottom photo)
  • Aperture f/9 (both)
  • Shutter 1/500 sec. (top) and 1/1600 sec. (bottom)
