Fun Friday: Bird Contortionist

I was working on my computer yesterday around noon, when one of my neighbors called to let me know that he had just heard (from his brother) that there were about a dozen American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) at the city lake, just a few miles from where I live. I immediately grabbed my camera/500mm telephoto lens/tripod and headed to the lake. When I arrived, there were 18 pelicans slowly traversing the lake, feeding as they went. Over the next 90 minutes, I made lots of photographs of this group, as well as another couple of groups that flew in and joined them. But this one photo stood out as a “Fun Friday” candidate. In this photo, one of the pelicans was preening … in a very contorted position!

In tomorrow’s post, I’ll share some more images of the pelicans that I captured. Then, I’ll move on to more Baja posts. Have a great weekend, everyone!
