Fun Friday: Locked & Loaded

Today’s “Fun Friday” post features a very aware Green Heron. While kayaking in the Amarugia CA (Missouri), I came upon this Green Heron who was perched on a stump in the creek, busy preening. When he saw me, he immediately turned his focus from himself, to me (with me feeling as if he was “locked and loaded” on me!):

In some locations, such as Florida, these herons tend to be pretty forgiving of people in close quarters with them. But back in Missouri, it is quite rare to be able to get very close to them. I have found in many instances, that being in a kayak helps to shorten the distance you are able to get to these beautiful birds.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 1D Mark 2 body
  • Canon 500mm, f/4 IS lens + Canon 1.4X TC
  • Handheld, with IS “On” (one of the few times I’ve dared to use this large, heavy lens, while kayaking)
  • ISO 400
  • Aperture f/5.6
  • Shutter Speed 1/100 sec.
