Fun Friday: Open Mouth, Insert … Foot?

… in this case, let’s insert beak! When one of the parents of a pair of Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) chicks in a nest at the Venice Rookery returned to the nest, the youngsters did everything they could to get food from the adult. Great blue herons feed their chicks by first catching and swallowing fish (or other small prey) and when they return to the nest, they regurgitate the food into the beaks of the youngsters. This one youngster was so aggressive for getting food that he immediately forced his beak inside the adult’s beak, yielding this interesting photo:

Behavior among birds, especially nesting birds, is hard to beat for nature photography!

  • Shutter 1/1250 sec.
