Fun Friday: Please, Not So Loud!

Today’s Fun Friday post comes from a rural Cass County (Missouri) Great Horned Owl nest that I am following. This nest has a pair of chicks that are growing by leaps and bounds. When I captured this image, it appears that the one chick is yelling into the other’s ear. But in reality, he was only yawning!

Great Horned Owl chicks in nest

This shot clearly shows the age progression of the chicks. The one yawning is a few days older and shows it, not only by his larger size, but by the orangey coloration that is now appearing around his eyes. The younger chick should be getting these markings very soon.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D Mark 2 body
  • Canon EF 500mm, f/4 lens, with Canon 2x TC (= 1000mm + a 1.7 camera crop factor = 1700mm) (Note: this image was cropped pretty heavily so that the facial expressions could be more easily seen)
  • Bogen 3221 tripod and Wemberly gimbal head
  • ISO 500
  • Aperture f/11
  • Shutter 1/800 sec.
