Great Blue Herons

Today’s post features a few of the Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) that are nesting in the Venice Rookery. Great Blue Herons have long been a common bird for most of us. At the Venice Rookery, Great Blues occupy many nests. Here are a few of the images I captured of these large birds at the rookery:

Photo Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF500mm, f/4 IS lens
  • Gitzo 1258-LVL carbon fiber tripod, with Wemberly gimball head
  • ISO, varied, either 800 or 500 (dependent on light levels)
  • Aperture f/9 (all)
  • Shutter, variable from 1/80 sec. to 1/3200 sec. (depending on ISO and light levels)
