As this post publishes, I’m on my way home from a successful, photography outing in Rocky Mountain National Park, in Colorado. The objective of this trip was to photograph the annual elk rut, as well as capture some of the magnificent fall colors of the Rocky Mountains. I’ve already posted a few images from this trip and have a lot more to share with you, so kick back and enjoy!
Today’s post includes some images I captured on the first morning in the park. The meadow at Moraine Park appeared as a disorganized herd of bulls and cows, as they meandered around the meadow. Here are a couple of images I captured that morning (note the yellow color of the aspens):
Over the next day or so, the elk became much more organized into small groups of a single bull and the cows he managed to round up and include in his “harem”. In other posts, I’ll show the individual groups and some of the interactions within the group.

- Canon EF100-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens, shot at 100mm
- Handheld, with IS “On”
- ISO 1600 (this image was captured a little post-sunrise, but before any sun hit the meadow)
- Aperture f/5.0 and f/5.6
- Shutter 1/160 sec. and 1/250 sec.
