Limpkin

Today’s post comes from my 2014 Florida trip. When I travel to Florida for photographing nature, I always try to find some time to stay in Myakka River State Park for a few days. Besides lots of gators, Myakka River has a wide variety of birds. One such bird is the Limpkin (Aramus guarauna). This crane-like bird is another water-loving bird and forages in Florida swamps and marshes, looking for large snails, mussels and other water creatures.

Here are a few of my favorite images of the Limpkin as it foraged in the Myakka River:

Fascinating birds to watch and photograph, although I never see many of them.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF 100-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens
  • Handheld, with IS “On”
  • ISO 400
  • Aperture f/5.6 to f/8
  • Shutter 1/60 sec. to 1/1250 sec.
