Today’s post includes some images I made in Yellowstone NP, at the Mammoth Hot Springs’ Lower Terraces. This was my first time at the Lower Terraces and I can truly say I should have stopped here before, during my previous visits to Yellowstone! The Lower Terraces are very easy to reach, just 1/4 mile from the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. From the parking lot, it is a very short and easy boardwalk trail to the thermal features at this location.
On the morning I first visited the Lower Terraces, it was pretty cold. Consequently, there was a lot of steam in the air, often making the brilliant colors difficult to see. Here are a few of my favorite images.
This first image was made as I walked towards the main thermal feature, and shows the overall “cliff” and water pool:
Walking a bit farther, you can get some great closeup shots of the colors in the feature:
In followup posts, I will have some more Mammoth Hot Springs images to share with you.
