Who said birds don’t have much of a brain? A while back I was photographing songbirds on my covered front porch. A male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) flew in and in a blink of an eye he grasped the cover of the suet feeder in his beak and proceeded to open the feeder. Then, he positioned himself so he could easily reach inside the open feeder and freely eat the suet! Why go through the hassle of reaching “through” the wire mesh if you can have free access from an open top?
