Shortly after leaving Frederick Sound, we arrived in Petersburg, Alaska (where we had started our trip a few days earlier). Our stop here was only for a couple of hours, so that we could get some supplies for the remainder of the trip. Several of the guests on the Delphinus walked into town to do some quick shopping, but my daughter and I decided to stick around the boat dock. Fortunately, we had a rather interesting sighting just a few feet from our boat!
We were watching seabirds as they would fly around the boats and land in the water. All at once, we saw a rather large, furry “beast” in the water, not far from where we were standing on the dock:
It took a couple of sightings of the beast before we could identify it … a Steller Sea Lion … then there were two! As we watched and photographed, one would suddenly appear at the surface with something in his mouth:
At first, it looked like he had an unlucky gull in his mouth (which would have been very unusual), but when we got a better look we could see that he had caught a halibut! As the Stellers would surface, they would violently shake the fish about the water in an attempt to tear it into small pieces. As the 2 Stellers continued to fish and feed, here are a few more images made (while others were shopping!):
I’ve always heard that these guys are not ones to mess with … seeing their large teeth, I guess not! And not only the teeth, but these guys are pretty large mammals, much larger than I would want to wrestle with!
Shortly after making these images, everyone showed back up on the Delphinus, thinking we must have been bored just sitting around the boat :o)
Next stop, Anan Creek and some wonderful black bear adventures!
