Oysters, Anyone?

Whenever I get the opportunity to visit Homer, Alaska I always try to visit some good friends who have a kayaking camp in Little Tutka Bay, which is ~ 12 miles across the water from Homer. When I visit my friends, I always go kayaking around the many little islands in the area. During one of my visits, we were pleasantly surprised to find this Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) foraging among the rocks at the water’s edge. This lovely bird is found along the Pacific coast, from California all the way up to Alaska. Here are a couple of images taken from a sea kayak during one of my trips to Little Tutka Bay:
