Pied-billed Grebe

On my last kayak outing, I ran upon a single Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) that was working at finding a fish dinner. As the grebe swam about, often diving for fish, I captured these images:

But I never saw him with a fish. The location I had chosen to kayak was one that totally dried up last summer, in our extreme Midwest drought. But even though it dried up, it is near a major river waterway that feeds this area whenever it floods, which can be quite frequently … when it rains! So I’m sure there is fish back at this location, but just not sure that there are many. In fact, I did see a quite large fish, either a catfish or carp, that was swimming near the surface during this kayak outing.
