Prairie Larkspur

Prairie Larkspur (Delphinium carolinianum) is a prairie plant that is quite elegant and dainty in appearance:

When traveling, I have typically seen this larkspur as a purplish color, but it can be found in deep blue, violet-lavendar, purple, or white. The Larkspur is a showy plant, growing erect and to 3-foot tall. They have the appearance of spurs, with many flowers growing on a single, thin stem. In Missouri, they seem to live mostly south of the Missouri River (the southern half of the state). These are always a welcomed find on the prairie!

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF 180mm, f/3.5 macro lens
  • Bogen 3221 Tripod, with ballhead
  • ISO 800 (due to some wind)
  • Aperture f/5
  • Shutter 1/1600 second and  1/2000 second
