Reflected Beauty

From a kayak outing in 2009, American Lotus plants in bloom, with reflections:

American Lotus and reflection

American Lotus are great plants to find when I’m kayaking. Bees and other insects are attracted to the large while flowers, allowing for some macro photography (although a bit difficult from a kayak). These plants also attract beavers and muskrats, who love to feed on the tough stalks.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 1D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 100mm-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens, with Canon 1.4x TC, shot at 460mm (all photos)
  • Handheld from a kayak, with IS “On”
  • ISO 400
  • Aperture f/8
  • Shutter 1/800 sec.
