While kayaking the other day, I looked across the water and saw this Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) that would swim around on the surface, then abruptly dive to look for a fish. After one such dive, he surfaced and immediately shook his head to rid himself of excess water. One of my Twitter followers loves this type of behavioral shot, so I decided to post it for my friend. Kind of a personalized “Fun Friday” post … enjoy!:
On my next kayak adventure, I ran across another Pied-billed Grebe. This one was much closer to me and did not seem to mind the kayak much, so I was able to grab a much closer shot. Note how dark the ring around his bill has gotten … he’s transforming into his summer plumage:
