Stuck in a Rut

I’ve been posting some Bighorn Sheep images from my recent trip to Colorado. The reason for this trip was the “rut”, which the bighorns are currently in the middle of. With hormones raging, the rams are on the prowl searching out a mate. Below are a couple of images I made on my first trip into Waterton Canyon, with both rams and ewes:

As you can see in this first image, a ram has apparently found his mate … but 2 other rams are sticking close by the pair:

Several Bighorn Sheep rams and a single ewe

And in this next image, the bighorn pair were photographed along the steep trail of the canyon walls:

Yet to come … some closeup images that I managed as a big ram wandered down the road and “posed” for some photos.

Photo Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon 100mm-400mm, f/4.5 – f/5.6 IS lens
  • Handheld
