Yankee Boy Basin, Colorado

When we jeeped to Yankee Boy Basin, we had a wonderful waterfall (I featured that in a couple of earlier posts), and below the waterfalls, a great little stream with wildflowers lining the bank: This is a focus-stacked image, combining 3 images of varying focus point in Helicon Focus software. In the foreground are some […]

Mountainside Waterfall

Yesterday’s post featured some Blue Columbine wildflowers with a waterfall in the background. Today’s post focuses on the waterfall from a different angle. The maroon wildflowers in front of the waterfall are King’s Crown (Rhodiola integrifolia), a rather low-growing wildflower that reaches from 4-12 inches. Each flower head is ~1 inch wide. Here are a […]

A Perfect “10”?

If I were writing a book on wildflowers, today’s subject would probably be my #1 Fave! The Blue Columbine (Aquilegia coerulea) has been a favorite of mine ever since I first found it growing in the Colorado mountains a few years ago (at Maroon Bells). The stunning blue pointed sepals, contrasting with the white petals […]

Corn Lily

One of the unique wildflowers of the San Juan mountains (southwest Colorado) is the Corn Lily (Veratrum californicum), also called False Hellebore. These plants tend to grow in clumps, or colonies, with each plant growing from 3-6 feet tall. The Corn Lily grows at altitudes of 3500 feet to 11,000 feet. I also found that […]
