Fun Friday: Furball

Two days ago, I was able to get over to my friends Pete and Ginny’s house for some “fun fotography”. The day before, Ginny had contacted me about a new addition in their rural acreage … an active Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) with a just-hatched chick. So, the next day I headed over with my equipment and set up for a fun time! At the time these images were made, it is believed this chick, the only one seen in the nest, is 2-days old. Here are a few images I captured. First, the adult owl:

Within a short time, mom flew off. Then, the chick showed itself:

I’m planning on returning to this nest about every 7 days, to get a progression of the chick’s growth.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF 500mm, f/4 IS lens, with Canon 1.4x and Canon 2x teleconvertors
  • Bogen 3221 tripod, with Wimberly gimbal head
  • ISO 500
  • Aperture f/11 (f/11 was used to capture mom flying in, if she returned while photographing the nest)
  • Shutter 1/500
