Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

Florida’s Swamp Bird
Today’s post features a couple of images I captured a few years ago in the Everglades National Park (Florida). The Anhinga is a fun bird to watch as it “snakes” through the swamp waters, to find/catch fish. The adult male, as shown in these two photos, are especially colorful in their breeding plumage … I […]

Fun Friday: Hangin’
While in Everglades NP this winter, I came across this Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus), hanging upside-down from a tree along the Anhinga Trail, just hanging out: Sex of this bird can be determined by it’s midcrown color … males have a red midcrown, while the female has a tan midcrown. Photographic Equipment Used: Canon 7D […]

Tri-colored Birdie
I photographed a few TriColored Herons (Egretta tricolor) along the Anhinga Trail. Along the Anhinga Trail, the Tri’s were pretty tranquil, usually quietly waiting for a fish to swim within easy grasp. Here are a few images I captured in the Everglades: At one time, the Tricolored Heron was know as the Louisiana Heron. Guess […]

Watch Your Step, Please!
I’ll be sharing a few more bird images from my winter Florida trip, but first I wanted to change the pace and feature some non-bird images today. While photographing along the Anhinga Trail, I was always conscious of watching for American Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). During the first portion of the Anhinga Trail, it is paved […]

You Photographers Are Boring Me!
While photographing a Wood Stork that flew in to the Anhinga Trail, a group of photographers (yours truly, one of them) began crowding around and photographing the bird at close range. The stork was very much ok with that, stopping from foraging only to look up at the gathering group. At one point, he gave […]

The “Jesus Bird”
Another interesting bird found along the Anhinga Trail in Everglades NP, was the Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinicus). It is also called a “swamp hen”, or yellow-legged gallinule. But I’ve also heard it called “the Jesus bird”. Why this name? Because of it’s behavior. If you watch a purple gallinule foraging in swamps and marshes, it […]

Anhinga Nestlings
I’ve posted on the male Anhinga and the female Anhinga. Today’s post features little Junior Anhinga … a couple of nestlings found in or near nests, along Anhinga Trail in the Everglades NP: I also saw an active Anhinga nest when I visited the Venice Rookery. That event actually has an interesting story behind it […]

Fun Friday: Quick, Hide the Car!
On my first trip to the Everglades NP … specifically, to the Anhinga Trail, I pulled up in the parking lot in the pre-sunrise hour to find just 3 cars already in the parking lot. Looking towards the trail, I saw this large box against the restroom complex: Are you kidding me? My first thought […]

The ‘Other’ Snake Bird
Today’s post features the adult female Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga). In yesterday’s post, I featured the male Anhinga, so I thought I’d share some images of the female today. As you can see from the images, there are a lot of similarities. But the female’s chest is a buff color, instead of black. Also note that […]

Shoulder-to-Shoulder with a Prehistoric Bird
Well, maybe not exactly correct, but it sure felt like it! At the same time the White Ibis was foraging along the Anhinga Trail (Everglades NP, Florida), a single Wood Stork (Mycteria americana) also flew in and began to forage along the trail, sometimes just feet away from where I was standing … in awe! […]
