(I’m busy collecting some new images this morning, so I’m re-posting a blog post of some favorite images I captured in my kayak, and published ~ 3 years ago. Enjoy!)
My last time out kayaking, late last week before our weekend storms moved in, was quite fruitful for me. My main objective was to capture some Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) in-flight images. I really adore these beautiful ducks and try to capture their unique beauty whenever I can. Unfortunately, all the wood ducks in my area are real skittish … after all, they are actively hunted by the area sports nuts. So, by working in the kayak, I can stay close to the water and often can “hide” behind some of the vegetation growing in and around the water.

In the hen image, you might have noticed a light green ring around her upper chest area. This is duckweed; the area has a lot of duckweed floating on the water surface here, often even giving the area a “slimey” appearance. Since these images were made, I have not been able to get back out in the kayak … we had lots of wind and rain over the weekend, continuing through today. Hopefully it will let up soon!
