Who Said It Never Snows in Heaven!

Some more wintry images from Alaska’s Chilkat River Valley, along the Inside Passage. At such a gorgeous place, it would seem to be Heaven on Earth … then snow hits!

It can be awfully cold and snowy conditions can make it difficult to watch all the action, but well worth the effort! In these first two images, the eagles are busy saving energy by perching in the trees:

And this pair of adult bald eagles seem to be patiently waiting for the snow to stop falling:

Shooting in snowy conditions is not what a lot of people prefer to do. But these interesting conditions do make for some outstanding photo opps!

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 1D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF100mm-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens + Canon 1.4x TC, shot at 140mm to 540mm
  • Handheld, with IS “On”
  • ISO 3200 (#1, #3, #4) and ISO 800 (Photo #2)
  • Aperture f/7.1 to f/9
  • Shutter 1/125 sec. to 1/800 sec.
