That First Step Is a Doozy!

Today’s post feature some images I captured while enjoying coffee on my front patio last week.

It was a cool, quiet, early morning on the front patio … that is, until something came falling through the leaves and the limbs of the big oak tree. Then a “thud”, followed by a baby Blue Jay shaking it’s head.

A recently-fledged Blue Jay baby had apparently taken a wrong step … or, still working on getting his small, flight wings to work! Here is a photo captured right after falling from the tree:

Hearing a lot of squawking, a parent Blue Jay was moving about the tree, above the fallen fledgling, monitoring it’s progress and safety:

Anxiously trying to get back into the tree, the fledgling tried … unsuccessfully, to climb the tree trunk:

Shortly after, the fledgling went out of sight. Always interesting to watch a newly-fledged bird as it navigates it’s new world!
