Montana High-Rise
Today’s post comes from one of my many visits to the Lee Metcalf NWR in southwest Montana. Not far from Missoula, the refuge is nestled at the foot of the mountains. While driving around the refuge, this Great Blue Heron rookery was observed at the top of a tall pine (?) tree: Photographic Equipment Used: […]

Family Duties
While photographing Osprey at the Lee Metcalf NWR (SW Montana) recently, I was able to photograph a sequence of Junior being fed by one of the adult osprey: A short time later, the other parent joined the two for a family portrait:

Fun Friday: Reflections of Nature
Today’s Fun Friday post is not a funny or cute photo, like they often are. Rather, it is just a “fun” photo that I enjoyed making while photographing at the Lee Metcalf NWR in SW Montana. Reflections always captivate me and I was really mesmerized, not only by the reflections of the cattails in the […]

Great Blue Heron Rookery
Directly behind the osprey nest at the Lee Metcalf NWR (SW Montana), there is a small Great Blue Heron Rookery. As I watched and photographed the osprey activity at the nest, I was often distracted from the loud and intense squawking that the juvenile herons were making in the rookery nests. Whenever an adult Great […]

Red-winged Blackbirds
Another common bird at the Lee Metcalf NWR in SW Montana, was the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus). These are common at home, too, but are always fun to watch! In fact, they are one of the most abundant birds found across America! Here are a couple of images of a male Red-winged Blackbird: And […]

Home Improvement
While photographing near the osprey nest at Lee Metcalf NWR, one of the adult osprey flew out of the nest for a few minutes, returning with a stick for the nest: As the osprey approached the nest, the young nestling raised his head to see what was going on: As the adult landed, […]

Osprey Over Lee Metcalf
Shortly after arriving at the Lee Metcalf NWR in southwest Montana, I was graced with beauty as the 2 adult osprey (Pandion haliaetus) flew over: The osprey at this location have a nest that is close to the refuge road. When I visited, the nest was active with one small osprey in the […]

Golden Beauty
After Glacier NP, my next stop was a place I really love … I’ve been there several times and I’m never disappointed. The place … Lee Metcalf NWR, in southwest Montana. One of the subjects I was after there was the nesting Osprey, but I’ll save those images for another, upcoming post. Today, I’m featuring […]

Lee Metcalf NWR, Part 3
Today’s post is the final one from the Lee Metcalf NWR and includes some other friends I met there, during my stopover on the way to Alaska. One of the cool birds that resides there is the Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus). We normally only see these birds back home (Missouri) for short periods of time, […]
